Supervised by:  Building Principal/Athletic Director

 

General Responsibilities:

The head coach will organize, coordinate, and promote a comprehensive program that is designed to meet the needs and interests of the school community.  The head coach will stress the importance of academic achievement.  In carrying out these duties, the head coach will demonstrate a high degree of ethics, professionalism, human relations, and be a positive role model for all students.

Essential Duties:

  • Informs students about the program and encourages their participation;
  • Communicates to all participants and parents the policies of the team,
  • Works with the Principal to maintain communication and to solve problems at the school level while supporting the ideas of the program/parent concern procedures;
  • Provides positive and appropriate communication and correspondence to players and parents;
  • Submits forms to the Athletic Director as required by, Manassas City School Board, and Metz Middle School (i.e., eligibility roster, players’ addresses, accident reports, );
  • Ensures that adequate supervision is provided for all students involved in the program;
  • Provides an atmosphere conducive to good sportsmanship;
  • Plans, organizes, and implements the teaching of fundamentals, strategies, rules, and proper conditioning;
  • Ensures safety of participants by inspecting facilities and equipment and being aware of adverse environmental conditions;
  • Reports any unsafe conditions to the facilities administrator and completes work orders in a timely manner to correct safety hazards;
  • Informs students of insurance program available through the Manassas City Public Schools
  • Instructs participants in personal hygiene and safety procedures and the need to report injuries to coach immediately;
  • Ensures the availability of a properly supplied first aid kit and emergency care cards at all times;
  • Implements appropriate procedures for handling injury situations;
  • Issues, collects, inventories, and stores equipment in conjunction with the director of student activities for equipment and facilities;
  • Compiles and maintains accurate individual and team performance records;
  • Organizes and coordinates fund raising activities following proper procedures;
  • Prohibits use of steroids or drugs of any kind;
  •   Monitors academic performance of athletes and ensure that academic assistance and follow-up is provided for athletes when needed;
  • Monitors academic eligibility of student-athletes and maintains master eligibility check for resident ineligibility, living arrangements that do not involve custodial parent, emergency data cards and other related records;
  • Organizes a preseason parent orientation meeting for all levels to review eligibility, athletic code, team rules, and risk factors for all athletes;
  • Assumes responsibly for distribution, collection, and general upkeep of all uniforms and equipment and providing an end of the season inventory;
  • Submits an annual written report evaluating the program, with recommendations for improvements;
  • Organizes and directs individual and small group practices effectively to maximize the skills of each player;
  • Models good judgment and positive behavior and maintains appropriate professional conduct towards players, other coaches, officials, and spectators;
  • Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, awards night and pep rallies/assemblies;
  • Promotes the athletic program by prompt, accurate reporting of scores to the local media while maintaining a positive relationship with the local media;
  • Collaborates with administration to develop a competitive and challenging schedule;
  • Complies with time constraints for practice and contest schedules, including holidays/Saturdays, as well as off-season schedules;
  • Provides supervision of athletes at all times, before school, after school and in the locker rooms;
  • Collaborates with appropriate staff to prepare budget, prepare required travel;
  • Attends and participates in conferences, clinics, and seminars to broaden knowledge of sport;
  • Demonstrate appropriate conditioning, skill training, and tactical training for successful participation;
  • Monitors academic achievement to support student/athlete in college exposure/recruiting;
  • Establishes seasonal objectives and goals.
  • Maintains a weekly and monthly practice schedule; Distribute team rosters, contest schedules
  • Maintain sport specific website in coordination with Metz Middle School website.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal/designee.

 

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the sport or activities sponsored, methods, materials, and best practices for successful student participation knowledge of adolescent growth and development.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with students, peers, parents and administrators
  • Excellent oral and written communications
  • Excellent human relations skills
  • Three years successful coaching experience is preferred
  • Playing experience in the sport to be coached is preferred, but not a requirement
  • Qualified applicants should provide evidence of coaching previous experience
  • Maintains school division required certifications
  • Serves as role model

 Requisite Education and Experience

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • 3-5 years coaching experience as head coach preferred
  • 3-5 years of previous coaching experience required
  • Holds or is eligible for First Aid and CPR certification
  • Complete the State Coaches Education Seminar within three (3) years of employment

 Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.  Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions are required.
