Position Title: Reading Support Teacher

 

Pay Grade:  Per Instructional Salary Scale     

 

Period of Employment:  10 months 

 

FLSA Status:  Exempt 

 

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Administrator

 

General Responsibilities: Provide guidance and support to students in the area of literacy instruction.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Co-teaches within the classroom to support students through small groups or one-on-one setting to remediate, accelerate, or develop skills/abilities.
  • Leverages educational models, teaching methods and strategies that ensure access for all learners.
  • Supports content specialists, administrators, and teachers in the implementation of a comprehensive, research-based literacy program.
  • Utilizes diagnostic and prescriptive approaches to determine student needs.
  • Provides feedback to students through the use of formative and summative assessments.
  • Partners with teachers to utilize class space to promote an environment conducive to learning, where all students’ social and emotional needs may be addressed collectively or individually, as needed.
  • Demonstrates effective strategies for building an inclusive classroom culture.
  • Serves as a content expert/instructional leader in the area of language arts.
  • Participates in curriculum writing, building resources, resource adoption process, and development of local assessments as assigned.
  • Identifies high leverage instructional tools to enhance engagement with learning.
  • Remains current with educational trends and techniques to determine the best ways to instruct students.
  • Provides professional development through modeling of evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Participates in unpacking standards to clarify expectations and inform instructional planning.
  • Collaborates with teachers to create high quality formative and summative assessments.
  • Participates in data driven discussions with teams to inform instruction and targeted support.
  • Engages in continuous learning of evidence-based leadership by attending professional learning opportunities.
  • Acts as liaison between the school and the Department of Student Achievement by attending meetings and disseminating information.
  • Partners with teachers and teams to encourage parent and community involvement in literacy education.
  • Fosters professional relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Leadership skills that will promote successful collaboration with administrators, teachers, and the school community.
  • Applies knowledge of current research and best practices in curriculum design, instructional planning, assessment, data analysis, and implementation.
  • Strong written, interpersonal, collaborative, speaking and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the behaviors of culturally diverse learners (e.g. ELL, SPED, Low Income, Gifted, etc.)
  • Committed to personal professional development and growth.
  • Consistently models professionalism in all settings.
  • Ability to resolve conflict and appropriately respond to concerns in a timely manner.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License; preferred endorsement as Reading Specialist.
  • Three (3) or more years of successful teaching experience.
  • Experience in a diverse, multicultural teaching and learning environment.
  • Experience with instructional technology, as well as willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates effective knowledge of and is sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of current research and best practices in ESOL programming, particularly as it relates to curriculum and instruction, literacy practices, methodological approaches, legal requirements, and monitoring and assessing student achievement.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in order to collaborate with all staff in a school and provide on-going staff development and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues in the pursuit of improvement of instruction (data-analysis and decision-making).
  • Demonstrated ability to design, model, and support ESOL/general education teachers in instructional practices that meet the needs of ESOL students.
  • Previous experience in leadership roles.
  • Experience in computer technology and student information system.
  • Assume responsibility for continued personal and professional growth in the teaching field.
  • Serves as a role model.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.  Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
