Supervised by and/or Reports to:  Director of Special Education/Building Principal

 

General Responsibilities:

Provides guidance and support to school staff in research based specialized instructional methodologies in reading, writing and mathematics for students with disabilities.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Researches and provides materials, information, and guidance to teachers at the school level regarding a range of effective and innovative practices through various activities such as individual discussions (informal and formal), coaching sessions, classroom demonstrations, classroom observations, study groups, staff meetings, and  professional development.
  • Supports teachers in effective instruction of students with disabilities by providing knowledge and resources about learning and teaching students with disabilities.
  • Supports teachers in effective instruction by providing knowledge and resources about data collection and progress monitoring, analyzing and interpreting data, and the application of using the data to inform planning, instruction, and drafting IEPs.
  • Provides support to teachers and administrators at the school level.
  • Provides model instruction to students in whole group, small group, or one-to-one setting.
  • Redelivers training specific to the needs of students with disabilities and their teachers.
  • Assists teachers in planning for differentiation, scaffolding, specially designed instruction, and effectively using co-teaching models during instruction.
  • Maintains paperwork consistently, appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates/facilitates instructional materials.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of schools, teachers and classrooms.
  • Meets regularly with central office Instructional Specialists.
  • Serves as an instructional leader/expert in the field of instruction and providing services to students with disabilities.
  • Provides instruction to students as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • Knowledge of current research and best practices in instruction and learning as it pertains to serving students with disabilities.
  • Strong speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
  • Expertise in instruction of students with disabilities.
  • Expertise in specially designed instruction that aligns with standards, curriculum, and assessment across multi-grade classrooms.
  • Experience in designing and delivering effective professional development activities at the district, school and classroom levels.
  • Experience in leadership roles.
  • Experience in a diverse, multicultural teaching and learning environment.
  • Serve as a role model.

 

Requisite Education and Experience:

 

  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in special education.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Five years special education teaching experience.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.  Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
